Responsibility for Sewer Line Maintenance/Repair

Effective Date: March 2, 2026 SOUTH BERWICK SEWER DISTRICT (SBSD) POLICY ON RESPONSIBILITY FOR SEWER LINE MAINTENANCE/REPAIR BETWEEN USERS AND SBSD • The Owner is responsible for the sewer line from the dwelling/business to the SBSD main. See Diagram 1 below. • SBSD is responsible for the sewer main lines. • The Owner must immediately notify SBSD by calling (207) 252-4274 upon discovery of a backed-up sewer line. • SBSD will inspect the sewer main to determine whether the blockage is in the main line or in the user's sewer line. • SBSD will provide maps, locations, and depths of sewer lines to assist the owner in repairing their line. • SBSD will take control of repairs if the sewage backup causes environmental impact; the owner will bear all costs for repairing their sewer line.
