The City of Hendersonville (City) has been home to some of the world’s most influential musical artists. Several of the world’s biggest hits in country music, pop music and rock music have been written and produced in the City of Hendersonville. Many of the hit musical songs and albums were produced by Hendersonville residents. The most recognizable and iconic artists synonymous with Hendersonville include Johnny and June Carter Cash, Roy Orbison and Conway Twitty. The City has an active Arts Council who focus their time on promoting the arts within the city. The Arts Council has successfully initiated and managed an annual Arts Festival that has been well attended by the public and artists alike. The Arts Council is embarking on a new endeavor to publicly promote the city’s musical heritage. To honor the city’s musical heritage the Arts Council wishes to cast life-size bronze images of the city’s prominent musicians and display them at a public city park. Bronze Legends Plaza is envisioned as a signature public-art destination celebrating Hendersonville’s extraordinary musical heritage. The initial concept for the Bronze Legends Plaza is to display four music icons (Johnny and June Carter Cash, Roy Orbison, Conway Twitty) together on a concrete or stone foundation, collectively called “the display”. The City seeks a composition that is historically respectful, artistically exceptional and distinctive to Hendersonville, with the potential to become a recognizable cultural landmark and visitor destination. The display should include a microphone and potentially one or more musical instruments. The display is likely going to serve as a photo spot for locals and tourists. The display should be arranged in a format that welcomes public interaction. Memorial Park has been selected as the probable location for the display due to its location, accessibility and existing infrastructure and parking. The City seeks to solicit proposals from artists who are experienced in bronze work and interested in designing, constructing, and installing all the bronze work in the display.
